Baima Snow Mountain Biodiversity Scientific Research and Yunnan Golden Monkey Conservation Project

The story starts from the last century...

July 2, 1998, Guilin Seven Star Park. When Mr. Liang Congjie gave a photo of a Yunnan golden monkey mother and daughter as a gift to US President Clinton,

Clinton asked: How many golden monkeys are there?
"There are about less than 1,200. As far as we know, this is the only red-lipped animal among primates other than humans."
The president looked at the photo, "Oh, that's my cousin!"

The whole audience laughed...

Northwest Yunnan - one of the 34 biodiversity hotspots in the world. The endangered Yunnan snub-nosed monkey living here, together with the rare animals and plants and ethnic minorities, has built an ecological barrier for the first bay of the Yangtze River in northwest Yunnan and has become a World Heritage Sites and Biodiversity Conservation Areas.

What kind of story do these snow mountain elves have?

What characteristics do they have?

As an endangered species,

What can we do to protect them?

The people who coexist with this magical land,

How are they responding to climate change?

How to protect Yunnan golden monkeys,

and how to face human-animal conflicts,

The livelihood challenges they still face,

Is there a better way to be sustainable?

Project experience

  1. Close contact with animals and plants in the core reserve; close observation of the behavior of Yunnan golden monkeys;

  2. Go into the community and learn about the cultural collision between Tibetan and Lisu people;

  3. Understand the important role of bees as a keystone species in protecting biodiversity;

  4. Understand the contribution of indigenous fish to biodiversity;

  5. Learn basic methods of animal research and anthropological research;

  6. Help local communities solve problems through service learning.

Project expected output

This COP15 children’s event,

Everyone will focus on learning

Rare flora and fauna and biodiversity protection,

and developing relationships with local ethnic minorities;

In order to enhance global thinking and sustainable development literacy,

Become a pioneer in advocating the global goals of sustainable development!

Research reports written by previous senior students were selected for the 18th International Conference on Sustainable Development held in Spain ; the China Children's Center's COP15 publication "Research Collection on Children and Biodiversity Conservation in China" was selected; International and domestic competitions such as Global Environment Facility’s International Environmental Reporter ; and published in domestic journals. Provide valuable accumulation for independent enrollment and comprehensive quality evaluation and background improvement for studying abroad!
