CBD COP15 Hainan Mangrove and Biodiversity Scientific Research Project

Hainan Island has China's largest tropical rainforest area, mature mangroves and coral reef resources, and is one of the most valuable biodiversity reserves in my country. We will explore what is the biodiversity status of Hainan mangroves? How does mangrove biodiversity differ in different regions? What’s so special about Hainan’s virgin tropical rainforest?

This investigation will focus on the biodiversity of Hainan mangroves, intertidal zones and seagrass beds, the Hainan tropical rainforest, and the transformation and livelihood of local communities. Through field surveys, scientific observations, nature notes, exchanges and discussions, and results reports, Think deeply about relevant problems layer by layer and learn to try to come up with solutions.

Project experience

NO.01

Scientific investigation of mangrove biodiversity in Hainan

Visit the Mangrove Museum and go to the tidal flats,

Observe the mangroves up close,

Identifying mangrove species.

Take action and provide in-depth community service

Plant mangrove saplings in the intertidal zone,

Clean up invasive alien species.

Go down to the tidal flat and investigate the benthic organisms in the intertidal zone.

Get in close contact with the sea on the beach of Danzhou Bay

Watch at night to look for the mysterious stick insects.

NO.02

Hainan Tropical Rainforest Inspection and Experience

Explore the Hainan Tropical Rainforest Ecosystem

Trace the river and swim in the Fairy Creek in the tropical rainforest

The largest apiary in Hainan:

Learn about bees and biodiversity conservation

NO.03

Research training, future actions

Fun icebreaker games and team building,

Let leadership explode!

Nightly learning feedback and summary,

Form a good closed loop of experience-summary-internalization metacognition!

Project expected output

Through field research, you will——

Understand and practice the basic methods of natural science investigation and social anthropology fieldwork;

Understand the important role of mangroves as a keystone species in protecting marine biodiversity;

Provide project activity results support for the CAS class through service learning such as helping to remove alien species and planting mangroves;

Improve your comprehensive literacy and gain practical certificates for general education of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to gain extra points for studying abroad!
